Leeds snap up Cadamarteri

From the Telegraph & Argus, first published Wednesday 23rd Jun 2004.

Danny Cadamarteri believes Leeds have offered him a "massive" chance to jump back into the Premiership limelight.

Cadamarteri is on the verge of completing a move across West Yorkshire after yesterday undergoing medical checks at Thorp Arch.

He could seal a switch from City as early as today after agreeing to become the latest summer signing for their relegated neighbours.

Cadamarteri, who had a season left on his contract, has been offered a two-year deal by Leeds. And the striker sees it as the perfect chance to get back into the big time.

He said: "This is a massive opportunity for myself. I'm joining a big club who will be challenging to get back into the Premier League straight away."

Cadamarteri will leave Valley Parade on a free transfer, although City will save in the region of £250,000 in wages. Colin Todd will be hoping that some of that can be used to increase his small player budget.

Todd said: "We know what Danny is capable of and he should be a major threat. As I told him when we first came in, he should have aspirations to get back up the ladder and into the Premiership.

"He has still got plenty of energy but obviously the question has been his injuries.

"I wanted to keep him but taking this job I have to accept certain conditions and if it's going to be to the benefit of the football club then everyone is happy.

"It's disappointing for players to go but if it's going to be the saviour of the club then you accept that."

Bradford-born Cadamarteri's time with City will be viewed with frustration.

Thrown a lifeline by his hometown club in February 2002 after losing his way at Everton, Cadamarteri scored on his debut at Gillingham and became an instant hit.

On his day he looked a match-winner and Bryan Robson acclaimed him as Premiership class when he took over last season. But Cadamarteri has been dogged by injuries and spent nearly a year out with tendinitis in his knee.

He had to wait until January for his first start last season but featured regularly in the closing stages and scored City's final goal in the First Division against Wimbledon.
