Cleckheaton 20 Hull Ionians 26

After the previous week's encouraging performance against Nuneaton, Cleckheaton looked to move up the National League Three North table against strugglers Hull Ionians. The hosts started well, a seventh-minute cross-kick by Chris Quinn just inside the visitors' 22 finding John Bentley, who went in for a try, Quinn converting. Both sides then lost plenty of ball until, in the 18th minute, Ionians pulled three points back with a penalty from Nick Cooper 15 metres into the home half. The visitors then upped the pace, full back Chris Harding scoring a try under the posts in the 22nd minute after a forward drive, Cooper converting. Quinn dropped a goal on the half-hour and three minutes later he converted Tom Gwilliam's try. Ionians were let off the hook when a pass to Neil Murray was judged forward, but in first-half injury time Garry Acton scored a try for Hull, Cooper's conversion giving them a 20-17 advantage. He added a penalty in the 47th minute, Quinn missing efforts in the 58th and 70th minutes. Cooper landed a penalty in the 72nd minute but Ionians survived thanks to wrong options and spurned shots at goal from Cleckheaton inside the last ten minutes. Quinn's injury-time penalty secured a bonus point.   more...
