Death of `gentleman' doctor

Tributes have been paid to a "real gentleman" who worked tirelessly to improve cancer care for patients in Bradford.

Dr Dennis Parker was consultant oncologist at Bradford Royal Infirmary for 20 years and played key roles in treating patients and research.

The 60-year-old died from a brain tumour 13 days ago after a year-long fight against cancer. BRI Clinical Nurse Specialist Maggie Ryan said he would always be fondly remembered. As a sister on the oncology ward, she worked alongside Dr Parker from the 1980s to his retirement three years ago. She said: "He was a wonderful person; a real gentleman. He always took an interest in the lives of people he worked with.

"He had a great relationship with patients, he respected everybody and got that back."

Dr Parker played a key role in BRI's Home from Home Appeal which raised more than £90,000 to provide better facilities on the oncology ward. He was heavily involved in the War on Cancer appeal and worked with researchers at Bradford University's oncology unit.

He had lived in Bradford but moved to the York area after retiring. He leaves a widow Susan and daughter Imogen.
