From the Telegraph & Argus, first published Thursday 3rd Mar 2005.

Youngsters are being given a funding boost in a bid to cut anti-social behaviour.

The Government-run Local Network Fund is pumping £34,340 into a range of social and educational projects in Bradford to curb anti-social behaviour.

A mentoring project, youth and sports club, refugee group, homework club and summer play-scheme will reap the benefits from the cash injection.

The Maendeleo Refugee Youth Group received £6,636.

The Cunliffe Villas, Manningham-based group is to produce weekly bulletins featuring local and national cases of anti-social behaviour, aiming to warn youngsters of the harsh punishments that can be meted out.

The African Community Supp-ort Project, based in Grace-church Street, was handed £7,000 to hold a weekly homework club with computer access for seven- to 16-year-olds, as well as parent sessions offering advice on how to help children with homework.

The Attock Community Assoc-iation is to use £7,000 to set up a new youth and sports club at Chichester House in Melbourne Place, Little Horton, where children can take part in internet, careers and health classes, as well as join sports teams.

A peer-mentoring project is to get underway at St Oswald's West End Centre in Christopher Street, Little Horton, with £6,704. Older children will mentor younger children after completing a 12-week training programme.

Scholemoor Community Ass- ociation will use £7,000 to fund a computer suite and start a homework club.

A total of £83,240 was dished out across West Yorkshire through the Halifax-based Community Foundation for Calderdale charity this year.

Grants manager Megan Vickery is urging other groups in the district to apply for funding from the Local Network Fund.

She said: "We would like to help more groups to make their projects materialise.

"I'm sure there are community groups across Bradford that are struggling for funding for lots of projects."

Community groups can call 0845 1130161 for an application pack.

Decisions are announced within 12 weeks after applications are submitted.
