Rhodes the driving force in Ilkley win

From the Telegraph & Argus, first published Wednesday 29th Jun 2005.

Andrew Rhodes produced a man-of-the-match display to give struggling Ilkley their second win of the season and dent Division B rivals Steeton's promotion hopes.

After opener Alex Bailey (61) gave them a good foundation, Rhodes came in at number seven to hit an unbeaten 48, taking the total to 209.

Steeton's Nick Carroll responded with a fine knock of 73 but found little support and the visitors were bowled out four runs short of victory, Rhodes taking five wickets.

Calverley continue to dominate games while just failing to take full points. Jake Brown's second century of the season helped them to a formidable 308 for seven but Silsden grafted their way to 142 for six at the close.

A defiant 46 not out from Adam Parkinson helped Thackley to a point as they chased Collingham's 300 for four, but Horsforth lost heavily to division leaders Pool, despite a fine half century from Ben Clarke.

Nick Hutton (55) again showed good form for Menston but they still went down to Hall Park and already look favourites for the drop.

In Division A, Chander Sheikhar inspired Tong Park to victory over Otley with a well constructed innings of 61.

It was Park's first outright win since May 7 and the second successive defeat for Otley since they beat Rawdon to go top of the table.

Matthew O'Grady's knock of 64 helped Otley to 179 but Park knocked them off with two overs and four wickets to spare, James Druce giving Sheikhar good back-up with his innings of 43.

It was an important win for Park, keeping them above second-from-bottom Burley, who won a thriller against North Leeds.

Australian Grant Costello hit an unbeaten 97 as Burley reached 216 for nine off their overs. Things looked gloomy when the visiting opening pair put on 120 but they then collapsed, losing quick wickets to Shane Etherington and three run outs.

They were still favourites when they needed just 20 with six overs and five wickets remaining but fell two runs short of victory.

Guiseley are still hovering close to the relegation spots after their defeat by Green Lane, for whom Stuart Hargreaves cracked a half century in 37 balls.

John Hughes (4-23) and Stewart Dobson (5-44) tore through the Adel batting to clinch victory for Rawdon after Simon Wilson (53) had guided them to 161 for eight.

Division C front-runners Ben Rhydding and Olicanian found runs easy to come by but each could have done with a declaration, because opponents Harden and Woodhouse were able to hang on for a point.

Brothers Ian (46no) and Steve Winterbottom (86no) followed Wade Kilbourne's 76 as Ben Rhydding reached 269 for five. Ian Winterbottom then took four cheap wickets but Harden managed to reach 132 for eight at the close.

Nick Errington (103) and David Corcoran (138) shared an opening stand of 245 for Olicanian as they raced to 351 for two, but their bowlers toiled on a friendly pitch and Woodhouse still had six wickets in hand at the end.

Rob Hearne (120) and Andrew Foulds (73) helped Upper Wharfedale to 256 for five with a stand of 117 but despite some good bowling by David Daggett (6-47), Skipton managed to cling on to their last wicket for a point.

Luke Stockhill (5-41) helped bowl out Addingham for 116 in reply to Bolton Villas 153 for eight. Richard Simpson was unfortunate to be on the losing side after taking four wickets and hitting 40.
