Cooker error led to fire

From the archive, first published Monday 4th Dec 2006.

Fire severely damaged the kitchen of a ground floor flat.

The blaze broke out when the occupant accidentally switched on a cooker ring instead of the oven, setting fire to items on the hob.

Firefighters - some wearing breathing apparatus - used a hose reel to tackle the blaze, in Harewood Road, Oakworth.

Two crews from Keighley Fire Station - and an emergency support vehicle manned by Red Cross volunteers - attended the incident, at around 4.30pm on Saturday.

A fire service spokesman said: "Fortunately the lady concerned, after discovering the fire, had the presence of mind to close the kitchen door, which prevented the flames spreading.

"The fire damage was quite severe but it was confined to the kitchen. There was a little smoke damage to the rest of the flat."

No one was injured.
