Lorry driver crushed to death

From the archive, first published Tuesday 5th Dec 2006.

A driver was crushed to death between two articulated wagons at a Baildon haulage yard early today.

The 46-year-old man, who has not been named, is believed to have been getting his lorry ready to move out of Vernon Land Transport in Tong Park, shortly after 5am when the tragedy happened.

Firecrews from Shipley and a major rescue unit from Cleckheaton were called out but paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Health and Safety Executive officials are investigating.

A fire service spokesman, who attended the incident, said he believed the man had been "half-in-half-out" his cab when he slipped between the door.

He said: "It looks as though the wagon then rolled forward to where another wagon was which forced the door shut on him," he said.

A police spokesman said there were no suspicious circumstances.
