Anti-weapons campaigners will hold a Valentine's Day event in Bradford as part of a tour to rekindle the spirit of Sir Bob Geldof's Live 8 and Make Poverty History events.

Yorkshire Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, which is based in the city, and Oxfam will visit Bradford University on Tuesday as part of a Yorkshire tour to promote anti-weapons campaigns.

It is the first tour of its kind to be run by both organisations.

Sarah Cartin, development worker at Yorkshire CND, based on Edmund Street, Little Horton, said: "With the success of the Make Poverty History Campaign it showed that people on the ground level can have more of an impact and put pressure on the Government."

She added: "We decided to come to Bradford because the students have been keen to support justice and international issues. This is a different way of engaging people."

Students will be able to vote on the No Trident replacement campaign against proposals to replace the British nuclear weapons system. Photographs will also be collected for Oxfam's Million Faces campaign, a visual petition to show concern about the spread of arms.

The issue will be brought to the international stage in June when the United Nations launches its first major review of small arms in five years and will host a landmark conference dealing with the issue. Dr Owen Greene, the university's director of research at the Peace Studies department, welcomed the efforts of campaigners.

Miss Cartin added: "We hope the tour will bring support to both these vital campaigns while illustrating the devastating impact caused by weapons, large and small across the world.

Campaigners will also visit Leeds and York universities.
