Quarmby delight at awards success

An Ilkley construction company has scooped two awards for a modern re-development.

Quarmby Construction Company won two trophies in the Altered Building Category at the Leeds Architecture Awards.

The company was rewarded for the redevelopment of the Carriageworks and Electric Press buildings, a listed office, restaurant, bar and arts complex situated on the fringe of Millennium Square in Leeds.

David Jones, managing director of Quarmby Construction, said: "This success is great news for the local community as well as for Quarmby. We have a very strong base here in Bradford working with local contractors and creating jobs for the local economy."

The awards celebrate good, innovative and sustainable architecture, conservation, landscape and lighting. They also aim to increase awareness and interest in the design of buildings and their surroundings.

Quarmby Construction has now picked up six awards in as many months. Last October the company received two awards from the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors for the Round Foundry in Leeds.

In November Quarmby celebrated another success at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Yorkshire Region White Rose Awards which included Building Of The Year for their work on the Underground Gallery at The Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

The building has been shortlisted for The Gulbenkian Prize for Museums and Galleries, Britain's biggest single arts prize.
