Velocity -- Dean Koontz

A nice guy in a small town again faces terrible danger -- but rarely for a Koontz thriller the perils are not supernatural.

Barman Billy is given increasingly cruel choices by a serial killer who repeatedly demands he chooses between two potential victims.

Billy is implicated in the murders and desperately tries to stay safe while uncovering his tormentor's identity.

But will our hero -- who has a violent secret in his own past -- prove to be just as evil as his adversary?

Velocity is not as intense as it could be, and is surprisingly impersonal in parts, but it's one of Koontz's best novels of recent years.
