BENEFICIARIES are being sought for this year's Ilkley Carnival as organisers begin the build-up to the big event.
The carnival committee is asking for local good causes to apply for a share in the cash to be raised on May Day.
Schoolchildren around the town have been hard at work focusing on this year's `Yorkshire' theme to design their entries for the annual painting competition.
The theme will provide inspiration for participants in the parade.
The winning painting will take pride of place on the cover of the carnival programme, and prizes are handed out for the artistic efforts of youngsters in several age groups.
The closing date for the competition was Monday, and judging will take place next Monday.
The carnival gave out thousands of pounds to more than 30 community organisations, charities and schools last year.
Many local groups help out on the day, carrying collection tins and following the parade through the town centre.
Among the 2005 beneficiaries were the Ilkley schools, several churches as well as Churches Together in Ilkley, Wharfedale Festival of Performing Arts, local Rotary Clubs, Ilkley sports clubs, Ilkley First Responders, the Army Benevolent Fund, and local Air Training Corps.
Organisations which would like to benefit this year are asked to contact the carnival secretary, Sue Varley, by calling (01943) 602775, by e-mail at (s.varley@ilkleygs.ngfl.ac.uk) or write to her at 3 Victoria Close, Ilkley, LS29 9BD.
