Cooke strike merely a consolation

From the archive, first published Thursday 9th Feb 2006.

Andy Cooke got on the scoresheet but it was no more than a consolation as City's second string were soundly beaten at Oakwell last night.

Barnsley took command from the start and were two up inside the first ten minutes.

First Thomas Harban escaped Patrick McGuire's attentions to power home a header from Anthony McParland's corner.

Then the Tykes doubled their lead when a pass from Simon Heslop carved open the defence for Nathan Joynes to slot the ball under goalkeeper Ben Saynor.

Joe Brown was furious at seeing a penalty shout rejected but Cooke nearly pulled one back after half an hour when he was twice brilliantly denied by Jonathan Loukes on the line.

Barnsley cashed in on that by making it 3-0 a minute later through Michael Coulson and Stefan Holt thumped a header against the post.

Just like the first clash at Valley Parade, Barnsley swapped keepers at the break with Andrew Naylor replacing the under-employed Scott Flinders.

But the action still centred around the visiting goal, with Heslop smashing home a fierce volley after 67 minutes after McParland's cross was only half-cleared by Saynor.

City at least had the final say by scoring with the last kick of the game.

Tom Kearney powered into the box and the ball was deflected to Cooke to turn it into the net.

City reserves: Saynor, Swift (Hopkins), O'Brien, Kearney, Denvers, Bentham, Colbeck, Claisse (Mitchell), Cooke, Brown, McGuire (Thornton). Subs (not used): Liburd, Smith.
