Tributes for big-band leader Gordon

From the archive, first published Tuesday 9th Jan 2007.

One of the country's most respected jazz drummers, who was regarded as one of Bradford's greatest musicians, has died.

Gordon Tetley, born at Raw Nook in Low Moor, dedicated his life to music. In fact he put together his first drum kit as a youngster out of empty butter tubs.

He travelled the world entertaining music lovers but he will be best remembered for forming The Gordon Tetley Big Band in 1969, which continues to play each Monday at the Dubrovnik hotel.

Musical director and band leader Eric Smith, who has been playing trumpet with the band for about 30 years, said: "We have lost an icon, a mentor for many musicians and an inspiration to many - a living legend in his time."

A talented jazz drummer from an early age, Mr Tetley first went into a recording studio aged just 13 as part of a five-piece Dixieland Band. He went on to perform at dance halls around the country with various dance bands, playing residencies and seasons before cruising the seas as a player with bands on ships.

Mr Smith said they had first met more than 30 years ago when he first came to listen to The Gordon Tetley Big Band.

He said: "In its infancy it was a collection of many musicians and probably many bad ones and Gordon was always seeking to improve.

"Gordon has always been passionate about big bands and was always interested in maintaining a high standard for people to enjoy, which is why I think there is no better big band musically in Yorkshire."

Despite not being able to play the drums in the past few years because of discomfort following a hip operation, Mr Tetley continued to take an active role in his band.

"He used to come most Mondays and he was always very enthusiastic, offering advice and tips," said Mr Smith.

Although music was a big passion in Mr Tetley's life he also had a great passion for vintage classic cars which he kept for many years.

The Gordon Tetley Big Band played a poignant performance last night at the Dubrovnik Hotel and Mr Smith is hoping to put together a memorial evening for him.

"At first we thought about cancelling but I honestly don't think Gordon would have wanted that to happen."

Mr Tetley, who died in the early hours of Sunday morning aged 80, leaves a wife and two sons.

l The Gordon Tetley Big Band plays at the Dubrovnik Hotel, Oak Avenue in Manningham, each Monday from 8.30pm. Entry is free.
