New jazz club inspired by graffiti

From the archive, first published Saturday 17th Mar 2007.

If you've ever travelled into Bradford Interchange by train and seen the piece of graffiti which reads Welcome Home Sexy' and wondered what the story was behind it, then you're not the only one.

Club organisers Matthew Geraghty and Rob Nichols are so intrigued with the phrase that they have decided to use it as the name for their new Jazz Club night, which opened at the New Beehive Inn's cellar bar in Westgate last night.

The club organisers think this piece of text is rooted in Bradford subconscious, which is exactly what they want this club to become.

Mr Geraghty said he first noticed the graffiti about four years ago, although people have told him it has been there for longer.

He said: "I was looking for a name for the club but wanted to shy away from using jazz in the title.

"The major jazz clubs in Yorkshire are Sheffield Jazz, Leeds Jazz, Huddersfield Jazz, Wakefield Jazz & Jazz at the Priestley - there's a pattern emerging here somewhere!

"I wanted something new."

He said the phase welcome home sexy' was interesting, cheeky and specific to Bradford.

He said: "Graffiti of this ilk always makes me wonder what drove a person to have to publicly express their thoughts or feelings. Welcome home sexy' falls into this category.

"Where was the person coming from? Where had they been? How long had they been away? Why was the individual so excited they had to write this? How did they know the recipient would know who had written it?"

Welcome Home Sexy kicked off with The Laura Fowles Quartet on Friday, with future events including the Kevin James Trio on Friday, April 20, and the Stuart McDonald Quartet on Friday, May 18, all at the New Beehive Inn, Bradford.

Doors open at 7.30pm and tickets cost £6 and £4. For details, call (01274) 721784.
