Abseilers drop in for charities

From the archive, first published Saturday 17th Mar 2007.

Brave abseilers took on the chilly conditions to drop down a 100 feet to raise money for charity.

People gathered at Bradford Central Library in the city centre to abseil down nine storeys of the library building this morning.

Each participant paid £35 and about £4,000 was raised and split between the Lord Mayor's Appeal and the National Missing Persons Bureau.

Karl Dunbar, of Bradford, arranged the event for the fourth year in succession. He chose the missing persons organisation as a tribute to his former co-organiser and close friend, David Plunkett who died in 2004.

Mr Plunkett, of Shelf, was missing for two weeks after going for a night out in Manchester, before his body was found in the Manchester Ship Canal.

The Lord Mayor, Councillor Choudhary Rangzeb, was among the abseilers. His appeal supports the Born in Bradford Project and the Bradford Sport and Recreation Association for People with Disabilities.
