Don't let DIY go up in flames

From the archive, first published Tuesday 20th Mar 2007.

DIY wannabees are being urged to cool their enthusiasm in a bid to keep safe this spring.

Fire chief Keith Robinson said DIYers often sparked fires, caused by electrical appliances and other equipment, at this time of year.

The Bradford district manager said: "My advice would be to know your limitations. If in doubt, take expert advice. Many DIY superstores will be able to help. No work should be started without carefully reading safety instructions.

"Finally, I would urge all householders to make sure they have a working smoke alarm. People are twice as likely to die in a house fire if they don't have an alarm, so it's vital to think of fire safety while carrying out domestic chores."

DIY electrical work in homes is covered by building regulations. For more information call free on 0870 1226 236.
