Have a say on town centre art

From the archive, first published Monday 5th Mar 2007.

People who live and work in Shipley are being asked what kind of artwork they would like to see in the town centre.

Kirkgate Studios and Workshops, Shipley, has netted £4,480 from the National Lottery's Awards For All scheme to consult people in the town on the kind of artwork they would like to see at the flowerbed near the steps on Market Square.

Assistant co-ordinator at Kirkgate Studios and Workshops Jackie Luckham said: "This is now the time for people to think about what artwork they would like to see in Shipley and let us know.

"I think this is the first time that the people of Shipley have been asked their opinions about what happens in their town centre in this way.

"We hope that many people will take this opportunity to get involved so that the artwork reflects what the community want."

For two weeks from March 12 postcards will be available in local shops, GPs' surgeries, community centres, churches and Shipley library for people to say if they want artwork in the town centre and if so, what they would like to see.

Volunteers from Kirkgate Studios and Workshops will be out and about in Well Croft on March 14, 21, 17 and 24, handing out postcards for people's ideas.

People can also contact Kirkgate Studios and Workshops to pass on their ideas.

Once all the ideas have been collected, drawings or models will be made of the three most popular ideas, exhibited in Shipley library after Easter and people will be asked to choose their favourite.
