A village park needs sprucing up in time to celebrate its 200 anniversary and youngsters are being urged to lend a hand. Blaze fear at city centre hotel

Fire and Rescue Service crews were called to the Hilton Hotel on Hall Ings, Bradford at 5.15pm today after a fire broke out on an upper floor. Staff and guests were evacuated. A spokesman confirmed that they had received a report of a fire on either the fourth or sixth floor of the Hilton after smoke was discovered. He said he did not believe the incident to be serious but that those in the building had been evacuated as a precaution. The cause of the fire is not known.   more...

International film festival comes to city

The National Media Museum is hosting the 13th Bradford International Film Festival which runs from Friday, March 9, until Sunday, March 24. A gala opening night on Friday will be attended by the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Choudhary Rangzeb, at 7pm, to witness the UK premiere of Amazing Grace. Filmmakers and celebrities including the likes of Alan Bennett, Ken Loach, Michael Parkinson, Euan Lloyd, Trudie Styler and David Arnold will all be making an appearance during the festival.   more...

Councillors join forces with police over trouble

Silsden town councillors are to join forces with the police to tackle anti-social behaviour problems. The decision was made after deputy mayor Liz Trainor requested that the town council support the police in writing a letter to the parents of young troublemakers. Coun Trainor said: "The police would take the letter to the parents saying this vandalism has got to stop and the town council supports this. The parents must be responsible for their kids."   more...

Statue damaged by vandals

Parishioners discovered a marble Virgin Mary statue had been damaged by vandals when they turned up for church in Skipton on Saturday. The four-foot tall figure was in a grotto on the walkway between Gargrave Road and St Stephen's Church. It had been pushed over and smashed, causing damage estimated at £700. The incident occurred between 5pm on Friday and 10.30am on Saturday. Anyone with information is asked to contact the police on (01423) 539334.   more...

Verdict due on firm's bid to sell land

Castle Acoustics will find out next week whether its third attempt to knock down its base and sell off the land for homes and offices will be permitted. The Skipton loudspeaker company has had two past attempts to relocate from Park Mill on Shortbank Road thwarted by the council's planning committee. On Monday, March 12, the Council will consider the firm's latest planning application, which seeks to knock down the main mill and build ten homes and six office units.   more...

Council refuses plea to chop down trees

Skipton Town Council will not cut down trees to appease residents, who say they are blocking their light. The council has agreed to keep pruning the trees in Skipton's Shortbank Gulley but will not remove any. Homeowners living on nearby Moorview Way raised the issue, saying the trees dropped debris and branches and left their homes in darkness.   more...

Harold's party boosts charity appeal

A surprise birthday party for a retired engineer from Sandbeds raised hundreds of pounds to help fight ovarian cancer. Guests at Harold Sheffield's 70th birthday celebrations at Victoria Hall, Keighley, on Saturday, March 3, donated money to Ovarian Cancer Action in lieu of gifts. They raised at least £650 for the group. Harold's wife, Pauline, said she felt very strongly about the need to combat the illness. A very good college friend of mine died of ovarian cancer two years ago - and my cousin also died of the same illness a couple of years before that," she said. About 200 people attended the birthday gathering, including relatives from as far afield as France, Germany and America.   more...

Waste campaign is launched

Companies and community groups are invited to the official opening event of a recycling group aiming to reduce landfill waste by connecting organisations with recycling agencies. The launch gives people the chance to meet members of the Why Waste team, talk to other users of the project and register to the online waste exchange. It is being held at the National Media Museum in Bradford, on Friday, March 30 at 6.45pm, where there will be a free prize draw, drinks, canapes and a free screening of Al Gore's, An Inconvenient Truth.
