Parishioners discovered a marble Virgin Mary statue had been damaged by vandals when they turned up for church in Skipton on Saturday. The four-foot tall figure was in a grotto on the walkway between Gargrave Road and St Stephen's Church. It had been pushed over and smashed, causing damage estimated at £700. The incident occurred between 5pm on Friday and 10.30am on Saturday. Anyone with information is asked to contact the police on (01423) 539334.
