Sneak-in thefts alert

From the archive, first published Monday 16th Apr 2007.

Police in the Keighley division are warning householders to guard against sneak thieves who seize their chance in warm weather.

Officers say that the fine forecast encourages home raiders to strike through open doors and windows.

PC Adrian Foyston, crime reduction officer for the area, says: "Always keep your doors locked and your windows secure. Most sneak-in offences are committed while the occupier is in the house.

"If you are upstairs, even for a few moments, think how easy it would be for someone to get in and out of your home without you knowing."

PC Foyston added: "This should also be considered when you are in the garden as offenders can often see or hear you while you are using the lawnmower or other garden tools and you will have little chance of seeing or hearing them sneaking into your home."

PC Foyston said keeping car keys, purses, mobile phones and other valuables out of sight and away from insecure windows and doors deterred opportunist criminals.
