Ice-cream van gutted by fire

From the archive, first published Monday 16th Apr 2007.

An ice-cream man's livelihood has gone up in smoke after his van was gutted in a fire.

Police are investigating a garage blaze, where the van was parked, at Highfield Crescent, Heaton.

Firefighters described the van as a write-off after battling the blaze for three hours on Sunday evening.

Fairweather Green fire station watch manager Peter Lau said: "On arrival, there was a substantial double garage heavily involved in fire. We took steps to stop it spreading, which we did successfully and fairly quickly. We stayed for around three hours in total.

"The garage was extremely badly damaged, as was the van, and police are investigating the cause."

Fire fighters from Shipley also attended the blaze at around 11pm.
